Cool weather delays crop progress

Jun 10, 2019 | 1:30 PM

Mother Nature was not particularly kind this past weekend.

Farmers received below normal temperatures and high winds over the weekend. There were reports of frost in the eastern part of the province in the Yorkton region and -2 Celsius in the Speers and Hafford area.

Lyle Cowell, the northeast manager of agronomy services for Nutrien Ag Solutions, said the northeast has been fortunate to escape frost.

“In the northeast there has not been enough frost to cause significant crop damage the past night,” Cowell said. “At this point I don’t think there was any true crop damage anyway.”

Cowell said the conditions are slowing down weed control operations.

“There’s two sides of it. One, you don’t want crop damage with the herbicide and cold nights can slow down the crop growth so you might have increased crop damage,” Cowell said. “The other side of it is you also want to achieve good weed control and sometimes for some herbicides you need to have a little bit better conditions for better weed control so it’s primarily a bit of delay on weed control.”

Karyn Hanson said there was also a brief hail storm yesterday west of Armley but it didn’t cause any serious damage.

“I don’t believe it did. It only lasted about five minutes and it was about pea-sized. I didn’t notice any damage at all,” Hanson said.
