New leadership at Global Institute for Food Security

Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS) has a new Chief Executive Officer.

Dr. Jason Reinheimer comes to the new role with international experience in research and innovation with expertise in crop improvement, breeding strategy, and large‑scale research and development at operations across Europe, Australia, and North America. His career spans applied plant breeding, research portfolio leadership, and the commercial delivery of agricultural and food innovations.

Located at the University of Saskatchewan (USask), GIFS works with industry, producers, academics, governments, and consumers to accelerate research and move science-based innovations from discovery to market.

“I am thrilled to be joining GIFS and to contribute to its mission of delivering real‑world impact through innovation. I look forward to partnering with the team and the broader innovation ecosystem to build on the institute’s impressive momentum,” Reinheimer said.

GIFS Board Chair Alanna Koch said Reinheimer brings a combination of scientific depth, global experience, and practical leadership to GIFS.

“His track record in driving innovation and delivering real‑world impact positions us strongly for the next phase of growth,” Koch said. “The Board is excited to welcome him and confident in the vision and energy he will bring to our organization.”

Most recently, Reinheimer served as Head of Cereals and Pulses Research at Limagrain Field Seeds, leading global research programs and international teams focused on accelerating genetic gain and strengthening product pipelines through modern breeding technologies. Prior to this, he held several senior research and leadership roles at Australian Grain Technologies (AGT), including leading cereal breeding programs and commercializing high‑performing wheat varieties.

Reinheimer holds a PhD in plant breeding and genetics from the University of Adelaide and was raised on his family’s grain farm in the Wimmera region of Victoria in southeastern Australia.

Reinheimer will assume his role as CEO on Jun. 15, after relocating to the Saskatoon area. His appointment follows the retirement of former CEO Dr. Steven R. Webb in February.
