Rain stalls seeding

May 15, 2019 | 11:21 AM

Showers this morning brought seeding to a halt in the northeast.

Mike Spratt farms west of Beatty. He was doing some work on the seeder this morning and feeding cows because it was a little too wet to seed.

Spratt said there hasn’t been much rain so far.

“We haven’t got a lot yet,” Spratt said. “We’ll be going in pretty short order if we don’t get anymore. It looks like a little more rain in the forecast here.”

While central and southern areas of the province are in desperate need of moisture, Spratt said seeding conditions were good prior to today’s rain. But that doesn’t mean the showers aren’t welcomed.

“Where I do need a little bit more rain would be on my hay and pasture land. It’s suffering with the cold spring so a nice warm rain would wake that grass up and help that situation,” Spratt said. “As far as seeding our grain crops, conditions are pretty nice right now.”
