Dry conditions are expected to continue on the prairies heading into spring while there is a risk of flooding in western Alberta and British Columbia.

The spring outlook from AccuWeather indicated moderate to severe drought conditions exist across much of southeastern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba. The trend may continue into the spring.

Meteorologist Brett Anderson said a more tranquil weather pattern is likely to unfold during March, April, and May with near to below-normal precipitation expected throughout the spring season.

Anderson expects below-normal temperatures for B.C. and western Alberta going into spring. That could delay the snowpack from melting, leading to an increased risk of flooding.

Winter weight designations for some highways in southern Saskatchewan have been removed.

The return to normal regulation weights is on 52 specific roads in 101 Rural Municipalities.

Winter weights typically run from about November to March. Once the roadbed freezes it can withstand heavier truck loads without being damaged. This allows shippers to carry more weight during the winter months.

Ministry of Highways monitors conditions to ensure this happens at the appropriate time and highways are protected from potential damage.

The interactive map shows winter weight restrictions and spring road bans.

Canada’s agriculture minister held her first official visit with the United States secretary of agriculture Tom Vilsack.

Marie-Claude Bibeau said she emphasized the need to work collaboratively on several issues but focused on the Canada-U.S. food supply chains, climate change and environmental sustainability.

Bibeau and Vilsack also discussed their mutual interest in science-based international trade.
