Community agriculture project still growing in Kelvington

KELVINGTON, SASK.,— While numerous events and operations in Saskatchewan were cancelled or postponed amidst the coronavirus pandemic, one community project is sprouting to see the light of day.

The Kelvington Community Grow Project has been going on since 2015 and won’t take 2020 off. Each year, the quarter section of land used for the project is seeded for canola. Roughly $50,000 per year is raised for the Kelvington Ag Society, and the community’s bowling alley, curling rink, skating rink, and swimming pool.

“It is all done by volunteers and we never have a problem getting what we need throughout the growing season,” Tyler Romanus, the project’s president said. “Whether that is seed, spray, hauling, the equipment to work the field or the volunteers.”

Donated inputs and volunteer labour are critical for the project’s success and sustainability. One of the agriculture businesses in the Kelvington area that partnered with the project is Prairie North Co-op, who donated diesel fuel and pre-burn chemicals.

“We’ve been involved with this for the last five years in Kelvington with the group,” Prairie North Co-op’s Agro Centre Manager Larry Kohl said. “We’ve been involved in whatever aspect they want us to be involved in with this project. We’re excited to be a part of it every year and we want to continue to see this community project prosper.”
