Ag Roundup for Tuesday, Feb. 3

Feb 3, 2026 | 10:10 AM

Premier Scott Moe has chimed in on the Agriculture and Agri-Food cuts across Saskatchewan.

He says ag research isn’t a good place to be making budget cuts.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada announced it’s cutting a number of ag research projects to make up budget numbers, including two research farms in the province.

Moe says ag research in Saskatchewan has been part of some big advancements, including zero till technology.

A number of farm groups have spoken out about the cuts, urging the federal government to reverse its decision.

Consultations are underway for the eventual new version of the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

Federal Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald held an in-person roundtable with various farm groups a few weeks ago, and President of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture Keith Currie called the meeting positive.

APAS president Bill Prybylski believes the cuts at Ag Canada will be brought up at some point. He suggests it may be a good idea to have that research funding tied into the framework.

The federal government will be looking for feedback across the country between now and the end of next year.

The current Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership wraps up on March 31, 2028 and the Next Policy Framework will succeed it the following day.
