The good and the bad of the prairie harvest

Challenging harvest conditions in Western Canada

Sep 15, 2025 | 2:52 PM

It’s been a mixed bag for Prairie farmers during this year’s harvest season — even within their own fields.

Wheat Growers Association president Gunter Jochum farms wheat, canola, oats and soybeans west of Winnipeg.

He says the quality of the crop has been excellent, but yields have varied field to field depending on where rain showers fell.

Even in regions where the crop is looking good, farmers say the harvest is being overshadowed by trade strife with China and the U-S — Canada’s two biggest agriculture customers.

Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan president Bill Prybylski grows grains and pulses west of Yorkton, Sask.

He says on his farm, this year’s harvest has been right on schedule and yields have been surprisingly good.

But Prybylski says even with a healthy harvest, there’s not going to be much margin left for farmers after China imposed steep tariffs on canola last month.
