Meteorologist Drew Lerner discusses effects of weekend rain

Aug 8, 2025 | 12:09 PM

Much of the region can expect heavy rain off and on throughout the next couple of days.

A rainfall warning is in effect for much of the northeast and east-central areas of the province, including Melfort, Tisdale, and Nipawin, with upwards of 75 mm possible.

World Weather Meteorologist Drew Lerner said areas closer to the northern treeline could receive closer to 100 mm by the time the low-pressure system exits the region.

Lerner said the rain should be welcomed by all producers heading into the fall.

“One of the things that I’ve heard from a lot of producers is that at this point the crop is what it is more or less, there will be some improvement that will definitely occur from this [rain] – but I think that there has been a lot of concern about what happens in 2026,” Lerner said. “Getting a significant amount of rain, even if it’s this early, can certainly lead us down to a better position when we come down to 2026.”

Recent rain in Alberta and southern Saskatchewan was certainly needed as well, and Lerner said that rain helped alleviate some of the concerns producers have had after a prolonged drought in some of those areas. According to Lerner, this weekend’s rain should go a long way toward diminishing the drought pattern in parts of this region as well.

He says the canola crop is just finishing the flowering stages in some areas while the rest is in the filling stage, and the rain should help them.

“We should be able to see a bottom line toward increasing yield,” said Lerner. “We may not see a tremendous increase in the number of seeds that we get, but the sizes will definitely improve.”

Lerner said in this region, the canola crop will see the most benefit from any rain, while the cereals are largely too advanced. In southern areas, the corn, soybeans, and flax crops will get a boost from the weekend rain. He added that next week’s weather should be a little more settled and will heat up toward the end of the week.
