Cold temperatures hitting Saskatchewan next week, snow forecasted for multiple communities

Farmers still out harvesting will want to do as much work as possible over the next couple of days.

That’s a message from Brian Proctor, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, who says temperatures are going to drop very fast.

“The next couple of days will be the best days for them to get their harvest finished,” he noted.

There’s also a chance of some areas getting snow next week.

“Our forecast, right now, is indicating periods of snow Monday night into Tuesday for Saskatoon and maybe Melfort… it looks like most of the heaviest precipitation will be south of Saskatoon,” said Proctor.

Other areas, such as Prince Albert, may see some light flurries.

The temperature is forecasted to hover around zero with overnight lows expected to sit between -8 C and -12 C. These are well below the average for this time of year as places like Prince Albert, Melfort, North Battleford, and Saskatoon typically see highs of 7 C and overnight lows of -4 C.

Is this a sign of things to come for the winter? Proctor thinks it’s a bit too early to tell.

“I really wouldn’t want to put my focus out there and say it’s cold and it’s going to be here all winter, I do think we’ll see some intermittent warm periods,” he said.

Environment and Climate Change Canada doesn’t like to look past two weeks in advance as the forecast becomes less reliable.

Meanwhile, places like British Columbia and Alberta are expected to see warmer than usual winters due to El Nino conditions. However, Proctor added these conditions don’t typically affect Saskatchewan the same way. —
