Statistics Canada Report

Wheat and canola yields expected to drop year-over-year across Canada

Sep 15, 2023 | 12:21 PM

This year hasn’t been too kind for wheat and canola, but it has been nice for other crops like corn for grain and soybeans.

That’s according to Statistics Canada’s August crop estimate report.

It notes wheat production is expected to decrease by over 13 per cent. This would amount to 29.8 million tonnes produced across the country.

Canola is looking at a roughly seven per cent decrease which would amount to just 17.4 million tonnes.

The report suggests lower yields are the main reason for both crops as wheat is averaging 41.7 bushels per acre, while canola is at 32.8 bushels per acre.

Two of the harder-hit crops are expected to be barley and oats. Barley production is expected to fall by more than 21 per cent to 7.8 million tonnes, while oat production is looking at a roughly 53 per cent drop to just 2.4 million tonnes, which would be the lowest total in more than a decade.

On the other hand, corn for grain and soybeans are each looking at 2.7 per cent increases.

Corn for grain production is projected to rise to 14.9 million tonnes, while soybean production is expected to hit 6.7 million tonnes.

These crops were planted at higher rates in multiple provinces, such as Ontario, Quebec, and Manitoba, which is the main reason the report is projecting these increases.
