An Alberta County has declared an agricultural disaster due to drought.

The lack of spring moisture has left the land stressed right at the start of prime growing season.

The County of Stettler is the first municipality to declare a disaster in Alberta this year, due to drought.

It is encouraging the provincial and federal governments to initiate programming to assist the agricultural industry and producers.

The county declared similar disasters in 2021 and 2018.

The federal and provincial governments joined forces to support the work being done at the Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence (LFCE).

Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit announced $6.6 million dollars in funding over the next five years at the annual LFCE field day.

Marit said the funding for the LFCE directly supports the kind of innovative work that helps the livestock sector not only stay globally competitive but remain a leader when it comes to best practices.

The LFCE is a research, teaching, and knowledge transfer facility that links research and innovation across the livestock production chain through feedlot, cow-calf, and veterinarian research and extension.

Beekeepers and grape growers hit hard by extreme weather conditions are set to be eligible for newly announced provincial support.

The Ontario government said it’s investing up to $10 million to help sectors offset extraordinary costs caused by significant bee colony and grapevine losses from summer 2021 through winter 2022.

Beekeepers who lost colonies to severe weather and mite damage can also apply for money to cover 70 per cent of the costs of purchasing replacements.

The program will cover up to 70 per cent of the costs of replacing or renewing grapevines during a period marked by drought, heavy rain and extreme cold snaps.
