Saskatchewan Speech from the throne

Agriculture featured in Saskatchewan throne speech

MELFORT, Sask. – The Saskatchewan legislature opened yesterday with the Speech from the Throne which highlighted several issues that will impact agriculture.

It was announced a new trade office will be opening in Germany. Western Canadian Wheat Growers chair Jim Wickett said this should have a positive impact on trade.

“That’s a higher value market. Sometimes it’s a little more difficult in Europe as they get a little more creative with the non-tariff trade barriers, but we still need a presence there to push Saskatchewan products,” Wickett said “I just think that sometimes the Saskatchewan voice doesn’t get heard there.”

Agriculture Minister David Marit said the province’s growth strategy includes increasing crop production to 45 million metric tonnes and livestock cash receipts to $3 billion.

“As a government, we are going to do what we can to get the right policies in place so that we can achieve those goals for farmers and ranchers,” Marit said.

Other agriculture-related priorities include the signing of the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, along with the federal government and all provinces and territories.

Producers will benefit from the government’s plans to continue the expansion of rural internet service by SaskTel.

The government also announced the creation of a made-in-Saskatchewan carbon offset credit program.
