Murray Lake Ice Fishing Derby coming up in March

Jan 31, 2022 | 1:08 PM

COCHIN, Sask. — Outdoors enthusiasts can look forward to attending the sixth annual Murray Lake Ice Fishing Derby coming up March 12 in the Cochin area.

Saulteaux First Nation and Moosomin First Nation are hosting the event; Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Inc. (BATC) is also a part sponsor.

Preston Weenie, a Moosomin First Nation band councillor with the sports and recreation portfolio, is one of the organizers of the derby.

Proceeds benefit Saulteaux and Moosomin First Nations sports and recreation, with a focus on youth programs.

“It’s obviously going to a good cause,” Weenie said.

The derby runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the site located near the Murray Lake boat launch. COVID-19 protocols will be in effect.

Weenie is hopeful COVID-19 cases in the area will start to decrease, so more people will be able to attend the event.

The derby promises up to $30,000 in cash payouts for winners in various categories as an incentive, with a 50-50 draw every hour.

Weenie said in the past the event featured big prize give-a-ways, but this year to make it easier it will be staying with just cash prizes instead.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. on the day of the event. People can also purchase tickets in advance at various participating locations, including Leisure Time Sports Excellence in North Battleford, and directly through the organizers. There is an early bird buy for those who purchase their tickets before March 7.

Weenie said the ice fishing derby is “always a good time,” and attracts families from all over.

“One year I saw someone from as far as the Northwest Territories,” he said adding many come from throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta.

“I really hope to see people come out, and to be safe too,” Weenie said.
