MELFORT, Sask. — The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association has sent a drought survival plan to the federal and provincial governments.

Stock Growers president Kelcy Elford said producers need immediate government action to ensure cattle producers have sufficient feed and water during the drought.

Elford wants improved support through AgriRecovery, Agristability and long-term low interest loans for drought-stricken farmers.

Other support proposals include funding for temporary fencing to enable grazing of unharvestable crops and more support for water projects.

The Stock Growers are also asking government to talk to the railways to find affordable transportation for moving cattle feed to areas where needed.

The Stock Growers also want a five-year tax deferral on sale of livestock.

Canada’s two largest railways are predicting a reduction in the grain crop in the coming year after moving record amounts of Canadian grain in the past year.

Calgary-based Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. reports it moved more than 30 million tonnes, up from 29.52 million tonnes during the 2019-2020 crop year.

The railways invested in larger hopper cars to help in transporting the bountiful harvest.

The record high temperatures and drought in Western Canada have stressed crops and could have a negative impact on yields if conditions persist.

Montreal-based CN expects total available supplies should be down 8.6 per cent to 80.7 million tonnes and below the three-year average of 86.1 million tonnes.
