MELFORT, Sask. — Canary seed will soon have official designation under the Canada Grain Act.

Following consultations with stakeholders the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) announced it would implement the regulatory changes. Producers had been asking for the change.

Starting Aug. 1, canary seed growers will benefit from the same rights, services and protections as they do on other regulated grains and oilseeds.

CGC said it consulted with canary seed handlers and growers to determine the grade and quality specifications for the crop.

A grade determinant table along with a moisture chart will be added to the website in July.

The Swine Health Information Center (SHIC) said the evolution of African Swine Fever is complicating the diagnosis of the infection.

The SHIC is tracking the global movement of the virus. Executive director Dr. Paul Sundberg said scientists have seen some evolution in the virus due in part to the use of unapproved gene deleted vaccines in Asia.

“Those unapproved vaccines may cause an infection and sometimes there are reports of different viral strains that are out there,” Sundberg said. “It’s rather difficult to separate the natural evolution of the virus itself with the viral strains that may be used in unapproved vaccines.”

Sundberg said scientists know the virus will kill most pigs that become infected.

Co-op Hail Insurance and Weatherlogics have partnered in a hailstorm data sharing project for 2021.

Weatherlogics president and chief scientist Scott Kehler said in working together there will be improved awareness, reporting, and damage assessment for hailstorm events that affect crops on the prairies.

Weatherlogics will provide hailstorm maps and forecasts to Co-op Hail to better understand areas affected by hailstorms.
