MELFORT, Sask. — The canola crush industry continues to grow.

Cargill has announced it will build a one-million-tonne/year crushing plant early next year.

The Regina plant will be similar in design to existing facilities in Clavet, Sask. and Camrose, Alta. There will also be upgrades to the two existing plants over the next 12 months to increase volume and broaden capabilities.

The Regina facility will create one million hours of employment through the construction phase. When the plant is complete roughly 50 full-time positions will be created.

The plant should be operational by early 2024.

The Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission (Sask Wheat) is calling on the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) to create an export sales reporting program.

Sask Wheat said this would put farmers on equal footing with other supply chain participants and enable farmers to make more informed marketing decisions.

Sask Wheat believes the current review of the Canada Grain Act provides an opportunity to expand the CGC’s responsibilities in terms of collection and dissemination of data to improve market transparency.

The report found that a lack of appropriate data led to producers missing out on better sales timing in the current crop year. Sask Wheat said not only did this impact a farmers’ bottom line but led to a larger loss to the Canadian economy because of the effect of agricultural crop production on other sectors of the economy.

Farmers have until Apr. 30 to participate in the Canada Grain Act consultations.
