Goat producers have an opportunity to have their say on the draft Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Goats.

The public comment period allows anyone with an interest in the industry to share their thoughts on goat welfare and examine the draft code and provide input.

The new code will promote sound management and welfare practices through recommendations and requirements for housing, feed and water, handling, euthanasia, on-farm slaughter, transport, and other management practices.

The National Farm Animal Care Council, the Canadian National Goat Federation and the Canadian Meat Goat Association partnered on the document.

The comment period ends Feb. 22.

The fall calf run is wrapping up and the fed cattle market continues to be stagnant.

Canfax manager and senior analyst Brian Perillat said it is disappointing because there is usually a slight jump in the market at the end of the run.

He said the market is almost $20 per hundredweight below a year ago.

Perillat said calf prices have held up despite the fact feedlots are still reporting losses.
