2021 Peace Country Beef Congress cancelled

Sep 29, 2020 | 1:46 PM

GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. – The 2021 edition of the Peace Country Beef Congress has been cancelled.

It has been held every year since 1998 and is usually held in January. Dawson Creek’s Lakota AgriPlex would have been the host venue.

President Keegan Scorgie says the outlook for early in 2021 is still uncertain.

“The way that COVID has been and just the economy as well, we just thought (this) was best instead of just go out and put the work in and get sponsorship without knowing what the show will look like as a whole with COVID and restrictions, we aren’t sure what that would look like.”

He thinks potential sponsors might be “looking to tighten their belts anyway”, adding, “so sponsorship would have been down anyway. It’s even tougher to go ask people to sponsor and then, come 2021, restrictions with COVID could change. I think cancelling the show was probably the best route we could go and the most responsible one.”

Scorgie says other things to take its place are being considered.

“I think restrictions on the BC side of the Peace are a little bit stricter than in Alberta. I think we’re looking at different avenues (like) a networking night. We haven’t had an AGM for 2020, so maybe making the AGM a little bit more of an event.”

As for cattle markets, Scorgie says there have been some yearlings come off grass and describes prices as “fairly favourable.”

“They’re looking good. The calf run I don’t think has started, so I think the cattle market, once we get into some of these cattle getting off pastures, we’ll see what the market is actually going to do. But I don’t think it looks poor, I think it’s on a positive note.”

Scorgie says they are open to thoughts and ideas on what should be done in place of the Congress. Those can be sent through the Peace Country Beef Congress Facebook page or by email through the event’s web site.
