Saskatchewan launches ag tech growth fund

SASKATCHEWAN – A new program hopes to find the next great idea in agriculture.

Applications are being accepted for a new $1 million program to encourage development of agricultural technology.

The AgTech Growth Fund is tasked with the development of new agriculture-related innovations.

Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit said the goal is to encourage local entrepreneurs to share their ideas as well as attract international companies.

“There are some brilliant young engineers in this province that probably have an idea or have a concept they want to develop further,” Marit told farmnewsNOW. “They just need funding.”

The program will be administered by Innovation Saskatchewan. Marit said this will bring forward new, exciting projects to aid the agriculture sector.

“I think the scope is wide in range and I’m anxious to see the applications we get and the opportunities we will have to promote new technology in the province,” he said.

Marit said Saskatchewan’s tech sector contributes $4.7 billion per year to the provincial economy.

“Saskatchewan is already an agriculture research hub and investing in farm equipment technology will complement our investments in crop breeding and production,” Marit said.

The AgTech Growth Fund replaces funding previously available for farm-centric technology through the Saskatchewan Advantage Innovation Fund.
