Global durum demand and a weakening dollar is bringing marketing opportunities for Canadian producers.

The Sask Wheat market outlook said global durum demand continues to be strong with reports from France that grocery store sales of pasta, flour and rice increased three times the amount sold in the same week last year.

French pasta makers have more than doubled production resulting in a surge in durum demand.

Canadian durum exports will continue to improve once the Great Lakes are open at the end of the month.

The report also said the weak Canadian dollar is providing a good opportunity to sell old crop stocks. Traders recommend holding new crop as there will likely be more negative news for the Canadian dollar.

Scientists are investigating the value of using functional amino acids to improve gut health and increase the productivity and profitability of swine.

The University of Saskatchewan (USask) and the Prairie Swine Centre are evaluating the inclusion of elevated levels of amino acids in the diets of weaned pigs to improve their ability to cope with disease.

USask PhD student Lucas Rodreiquez said this research looks at Methianine, Threonoine and Triptphan, three commercially available amino acids used in the swine industry for years.

He said scientists are looking at the influence of the amino acids on gut health, growth potential and other indicators of the health status of the pig.
