A new survey said 82 per cent of farmers feel the federal carbon tax is negatively impacting their business.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) said farmers estimate they will pay almost $14,000 in federal carbon taxes from Apr. 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020.

Vice-president western Canada and agri-business Marilyn Braun-Pollon said CFIB sent a letter to agriculture minister Marie-Claude Bibeau outlining farmers’ views on the federal carbon tax and the significant negative impact it is having on farm businesses.

CFIB recommended natural gas, propane, and aviation fuel used by farmers for farming activities should be exempt from the carbon tax.

The federal government should end the practice of charging GST on the federal carbon tax and stop further increases in the overall tax burden on farmers.

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland has agreed to NDP proposals to get support for ratifying the new continental trade agreement among Canada, United States and Mexico.

Freeland said the government will provide the House of Commons with an economic-impact assessment at the same time the legislation to ratify a trade deal is tabled.

She said she wants to make Canada’s trade negotiations more transparent in future deals.

Freeland said the report will include estimates of overall economic impact of a free trade agreement on the Canadian economy.

BASF vice president Jonathan Sweat said the program helps build the skills needed to strengthen the voice of Canadian youth.

Civic engagement is a cornerstone of 4-H activities across Canada. It encourages members to take action on issues that are important to them.

The partnership will also include support for Show Your 4-H Colours in November.
