Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said the federal government should already be working toward ending the CN Rail strike.

Moe said he has spoken to Transport Minister Marc Garneau and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland about the labour disruption, which he said will jeopardize jobs.

Moe said the loss of shipping will affect industries such as mining, energy and agriculture.

He said day by day grain deliveries are not arriving at port.

About 3,200 members of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference walked off the job Tuesday after the union and CN Rail failed to reach a contract deal.

The Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) urged the federal government to take immediate action to resolve the CN Rail strike.

CFA President Mary Robinson warned it could have permanent consequences for farmers and Canada’s international trade relationships.

She said while the negotiation process must be respected, it will be farmers who bear the brunt of a dispute that is beyond their control.

The strike comes at a devastating time for farmers due to bad weather and international trade disputes.

CFA represents nearly 200,000 Canadian farmers and farm families.

The Grain Growers of Canada (GGC) called on agriculture ministers to recognize the crisis facing grain farmers across the country and immediately fix the AgriStability program.

GGC members feel effectiveness of AgriStability was reduced in 2013 when cuts were made, including a reduction of coverage of reference margins from 85 to 70 per cent. This caused many farmers to withdraw from the program.

Canada’s agriculture ministers will meet in Ottawa on Dec. 17. Agri-Stability will be on the agenda.
