Crop Report

Good yields, poor quality in last crop report

Nov 21, 2019 | 2:27 PM

Saskatchewan producers now have 93 per cent of the crop combined.

In the final crop report of the season, Crops Extension Specialist Cory Jacob said harvest operations have continued in parts of the province as weather and field conditions permit.

“We’re hoping producers can get a little more crop off if there is decent weather in November and December, but the reality is there will be some crop leftover and harvested in the spring. It’s looks like we won’t be able to get everything off.”

The east central region has the most crop remaining in the field with 83 per cent combined. Jacob said not only did the northeast get the most crop in the bin at 98 per cent, it also reported the highest yields in the province which is unusual.

“In the north east not only were yields average to above average, they are leading the province in harvest progress. That’s not normal. They are typically behind the southern and central regions. The northeast had very good yields is what we were hearing from producers.” he said. “Some of the crop that was combined earlier, if it was ready, definitely faired better for quality but anything combined into September with the snow and the rain, lots of crop was downgraded for bleaching sprouting and staining. Overall crop quality has taken a big hit in the northeast, especially on the cereal crops and pulse crops that couldn’t be harvested.

Jacob said the other good news is cattle producers have adequate winter feed supplies.

“That has turned around. Earlier on there were some concerns about feed supplies. Now, there are situations of feed grain surpluses,” he said.

Saskatchewan Agriculture has a group of 202 volunteer crop reporters from across the province that provide updates to the ministry and make the weekly reports possible.
