Saskatchewan feeder cattle prices were mixed this past week.

Feeder steer markets were mixed with prices $3.60 per hundredweight lower to $2.37 per hundredweight higher compared to the previous week. The largest decline was in 900 pound plus category. Heifers were down in all weight categories.

Ministry of Agriculture cattle specialist Leah Clark said even with the lower prices she sees a lot of positive indicators supporting the markets including favourable feed prices, lower barley prices and good future prices.

Marketings have been slower compared to last year. Canfax reported roughly 19,500 head sold, which is down from 36,000 for the same week last year.

A man well known in the livestock sector is being remembered.

Vern Racz started his career in Yorkton as a livestock specialist in the 1970s. He then moved to the University of Saskatchewan and went on to manage the Feed Testing Lab.

He was also involved with the creation of the Feed Resource Centre, developing and marketing feed and feed stuffs. Racz also worked as a consultant in several different countries.

He retired from the U of S in 2011 and continued work as a forensic agrologist. He was inducted in the Saskatchewan Agricultural Hall of Fame last year.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon at McClure United Church in Saskatoon.

The pork sector is ready to tackle challenges and opportunities.

The Canadian Pork Council met this week in Ottawa.

A large part of the meeting was devoted to issues surrounding the response of the industry following an outbreak of African swine fever.

The industry also discussed some of the other challenges facing the sector from the loss of the Chinese market, to ensuring producers get a fair price for their hogs and working with the newly elected government.

The council also celebrated the tenth anniversary of the opening of a marketing office in Japan.
