Agriculture Roundup

Agriculture Roundup for Friday August 30, 2019

Aug 30, 2019 | 11:02 AM

Harvest is still way behind in our province.

Farmers are at six per cent combined, and the five-year average is 16 per cent combined. Poor weather early in the growing season put everything behind for some producers.

The majority of crop damage this past week was from strong winds and hail.

The Canadian Pork Council wants producers to quiz candidates in the upcoming federal election on issues important to the industry.

The council lists four main initiatives it wants support for.

Those include addressing African Swine Fever, developing better risk management programs, maintaining Asian market access and creating a pork promotion research agency.

A new report suggests that in little more than a decade, farms will be operated largely by autonomous machines and digital systems.

The RBC report says that means many of the new jobs in agriculture will go to engineers, scientists, communications professionals and other digitally savvy workers.

RBC says the labour shortage in Canadian agriculture is expected to grow by 123,000 by the year 2030, and the skills required to own and operate a farm are changing every day.

The report says automation and data analytics are game-changing technologies.
