Intense storm hits Armley district

Aug 26, 2019 | 5:00 PM

What little harvest activity was underway on the weekend near Armley ground to a halt with a short but intense storm.

The system started west of Melfort and tracked northeast on Saturday afternoon.

Some areas were hit with heavy rain in a very short period of time.

Valleau Seeds is located nine miles east of Gronlid. Jack Valleau said he was home when the storm moved in.

“I was working in the garage and had the doors open. There was water running in the door and across the floor,” he said, adding the inch and a half of rain came quickly.

“I’m thinking about an hour and a half. We were just talking to our neighbours to the northwest and they watched that storm just hang over here. It just seemed like it was just moving around,” Valleau said. We didn’t get any hail out of it but Ridgedale got some hail about seven miles away. I think they got two inches there. I don’t know what crop damage was done. There would have been some.

“I was really surprised, if you went North and to the West they only had a couple of tenths.”

Valleau said there hasn’t been much combining done in the area so far, but it will now take some time to dry up.
