Crop conditions are showing a wide range across the Saskatchewan grainbelt.

Provincial crops analyst Cory Jacob said crops range from poor to excellent, but the majority are fair to good.

He says crops are ripening and the combines should be rolling soon.

“I’m not saying a harvest isn’t going on in in the province but based on what we are hearing it’s about another week away and we’ll be seeing some machines rolling by the sounds of it,” Jacob said.

Jacob noted some crops are one to two weeks behind normal development.

He said the majority of crop loss this past week was caused by high winds, hail, localized flooding, insects and crop diseases.

Brian Perillet is the manager of CanFax – a division of the Canadian Cattleman’s Association, he said farmers have gone from a desperate situation to seeing improvements after recent rains.

“Probably going to be some really good silage crops in some areas and hay has been coming off where we will now have a chance for some second cuts and that’s going to take some pressure off,” Perillet said.

He said the hailed out crops will result in green feed for producers.
