The Melfort Ag Society Regional 4-H Beef show and sale continues today with the steer show.

Members from Beatty, Meskanaw-Ethelton, Three Lakes, Bar West, Moose Range and Tisdale clubs will show over 200 head of cattle during the two day event.

The event concludes this evening with the steer sale.

Federal Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step up inspections on all products from China and to consider slapping tariffs on Chinese imports.

China has increased inspections that have led to the suspension or obstruction of key Canadian agricultural imports, including pork and canola.

Scheer sent a letter to Trudeau to take a harder line with China, which is Canada’s second-biggest trading partner.

Scheer said Trudeau should respond by intensifying Canadian inspections on all imports from China and to start exploring possible retaliatory levies on Chinese products that will have the greatest possible impact while minimizing harm to consumers in Canada.

The Canada Organic Trade Association will receive $992,000 to help the organic industry resolve market access issues and promote the Canadian brand.

The agriculture ministry said the project includes activities such as attending trade shows, hosting incoming missions, participating at international trade advocacy meetings and creating a retailer training webinar series and manual.

The investment is through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership AgriMarketing Program.

The Canadian Pork Council is increasing the price of ear tags effective Aug. 1 for its national swine traceability system.

The price of PigTRACE tags will rise 20 cents per small tag and 35 cents per large tag. Electronic ear tag prices will not change.

Increasing operational costs are being cited as the reason.

Current pricing will be in place for all orders placed and paid for by July 31.
