Stock growers gather in Moose Jaw

Ranchers and farmers from all over Saskatchewan spent the last few days talking shop in Moose Jaw at the exhibition grounds.

The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association’s annual general meeting went well according to Association President Bill Huber.

“Excellent AGM, a good line up of speakers, informative speakers and good attendance,” he said.

The attendance numbers were something Huber found to be encouraging as June is a busy time for many livestock producers. He estimated between 100 to 150 registered to attend.

Speakers at the meeting came from a variety of organizations including the provincial government as well as federal lobby groups like the Canadian Cattleman’s Association. Huber said discussion surrounded market conditions and future outlook along with other important issues.

One of the biggest issue on the minds of producers is the current dry conditions across much of the province. Huber said overall conditions are dry, especially south of the Yellowhead Highway.

“As you drive through the province and especially on the Trans-Canada Highway from West to East or East to West you see variations. There’s places that the grass is totally brown and dried right off and then a few miles down the road you do see a little bit of green,” he said.

Huber said livestock producers would always appreciate some rain to help out their pastures.

If current conditions continue Huber said some producers are left with 90 to 120 days of grass left.

Besides the current environmental conditions, Huber said trade and market access, including the latest trade agreement with the United States is present on producers’ minds.

“Certainly, we’re feeling good about it,” he said.

Huber said keeping access to the U.S. is important not only due to it being a big market for sales, but also because many animals go back and forth and are valuable for producers on both sides.

The AGM officially wrapped up late Tuesday afternoon.
