Good governance is a focus of the latest Saskatchewan Association of Rurual Municipalities (SARM) conference, as seven rural municipalities over the last 20 years have faced inspections.

Two of the inspections took place last year.

President Ray Orb said SARM is working with the province to encourage municipal leaders to take training on conflict-of-interest policy.

Orb said elected officials need to understand the rules.

“We’ve been partnering Sask. Municipal Hail and South East College based out of Weyburn and we’re offering a lot of training for our members, not only for elected officials, but for administrators as well,” Orb said. “We have to understand good governance and we have to know what we are required to do by the province and we’re getting that message across. I know we’ve had had some rural municipalities in the news but we have almost 300 rural municipalities in this province.”

Orb said it’s important to note that complaints can be filed with the provincial Ombudsman.

About 200 delegates are attending the convention in Saskatoon.
