4-H members from across Saskatchewan compete for scholarships

The Prairieland Youth Leadership Conference presented $12,000 in scholarships to Saskatchewan 4-H members over the weekend.

Forty-six members took part in a number of events that focused on leadership, interactive, competitive and social skills. A panel of judges selected the top five.

Brett Rumpell from Craven finished in first place and received a $4,500 scholarship. Rumpell is a member of the Long Laketon Multiple 4-H club. She is in her first year at the University of Saskatchewan where she is majoring in agricultural biology.

Rumpell attended several Prairieland Youth Leadership Conferences over the years.

“My first Prairieland, I was a shy 12-year-old. I didn’t know what I was going into when I came here. I’m very happy with the outcome,” Rumpell said.

Rumpell said she appreciates the scholarship but added there is so much more to being a part of this program.

“The biggest thing that I’ve always gained in this conference is communication skills. We learn how to network and meet new people,” Rumpell said. “I’ve learned other skills along the way like marketing, creating your own personal brand, how to talk to consumers about agriculture. All very useful skills.”

Second place and a $3,000 scholarship went to Simon Mann of the Handel Multiple 4-H Club. Morgan Davey with the Vanscoy Multiple 4-H Club placed third and received a $2,500 scholarship.

Fourth and fifth place participants were Ruby Kinash with the Wishart Multiple 4-H Club and Dylan Watts, a member of the Beechy Multiple 4-H Club. They each received $1,000.
