Sheep show hopes to attract new members
Saskatchewan’s sheep industry is on display this weekend at the Uniplex in Humboldt.
The Grasslands Sheep Exhibition runs through Sunday, and features a trade show and sale. Executive Director Gord Schroeder said the event gives people who are considering entering the industry a chance to ask questions and talk to current sheep farmers.
“The biggest misconception is that [the sheep industry] is not economical and it’s a lot of work but it is very profitable and prices have been strong for a number of years,” he said.
There are over 800 sheep farmers in Saskatchewan registered with the Saskatchewan Sheep Development Board. Schroeder said the industry has been pretty stable for a while.
“We are seeing some reduction in the number of farms but the flocks are increasing so our numbers are up slightly,” he said.
Schroeder said the weekend is a great opportunity for farmers to share ideas. In addition to a wool workshop and shearing demonstrations, there will be banquet supper and auction Saturday night.
